Laxmi Diyawala
Our craft
Laxmi Diyawala is the shop of Laxmi Decorative Diya's Creation, a clay workshop in Chunar, in the Mirzapur district of Uttar Pradesh. Since 2016 we have made terracotta and clay pieces by hand for homes, temples and shops across India: water matkas and bottles, cookware, and the hand-painted diyas and diya plates people light for puja, Diwali and every festival in between.
Made by hand, start to finish
Every piece begins as local clay. It is cleaned, soaked and kneaded until it is smooth enough to work, then shaped on the wheel or by hand. Each piece dries slowly in the shade, because clay that dries too fast cracks, and is then fired in the kiln until it turns from grey-brown to the warm red of terracotta.
Our water pots and cookware are left unglazed. Bare fired clay breathes: a matka keeps water naturally cool, and a clay handi cooks slowly and evenly. Our decorative diyas and plates are painted by hand after firing, one colour at a time.
Why no two pieces are the same
Because every piece is thrown, fired and painted by hand, small differences in shade, size and pattern are normal. They are the mark of handwork, not a fault. The photographs on our site show the piece you will get, but yours will have its own small character.
What we make
- Diyas and festive décor: hand-painted diyas, multi-diya plates and decorative pieces for puja, temples, weddings and gifting.
- Water pots: clay matkas and bottles that keep water cool without electricity.
- Clay cookware: handis, kadais and serving pieces for slow, traditional cooking.
